Yangzhou velvet flowers are made of silk and copper wire. They are also called official flowers and happy flowers. They are a traditional art that is appreciated by both the elite and the masses. They entered the palace as early as the Tang Dynasty. Yangzhou velvet flowers are gorgeous and colorful, but not vulgar, and are known as the "little jade" among handicrafts. 
Velvet flowers are homophonic to "ronghua", which means auspicious blessings. Therefore, every "one event and three festivals" (i.e. weddings, Spring Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival), there is a common custom of using velvet flowers as decorations.
The popularity of Yangzhou velvet flowers can be traced back to 1,300 years ago. In spring, Li Xian, one of the Emperors of the Tang Dynasty, designated Yangzhou velvet flowers as imperial palace flowers to reward his beloved concubines. In ancient Yangzhou, the flower-making industry was very developed and it was a famous production area of ​​craft flowers in China. Among the flower-making in Yangzhou, velvet flowers have the earliest history, the most varieties, and the greatest influence.
Wang Guan of the Song Dynasty wrote in Peony Spectrum: "No matter how high or low the people in Yangzhou are, they all wear flowers. Yangzhou velvet flowers are mostly made of high-quality silk. Through dyeing and processing, simple tools are used, and the techniques of generalization and exaggeration are used to concentrate and concisely depict the characteristics of various flower shapes and birds, giving them shape and spirit, making the small and exquisite velvet flowers and birds lively and lovely.
